Color Meditation

When I am feeling nauseous, worried, unable to sleep, or uneasy in any way, I do a color meditation. It is easy to do, it helps lower the heart rate and blood pressure and it calms anxiety. Give it a try! Here is what I do:

I start by sitting or laying down comfortably. Then I do some deep breathing to relax. I take deep breaths, in through the nose, and out the mouth. As I exhale, I imagine letting go of any negative thoughts and energy and imagine myself sinking further into the bed (or chair).

Once I am fully relaxed, I start the actual color meditation. I start by thinking about the color red. I visualize as many red items that I can think of. I envision the sight, taste, smell, sound and/or feeling of each item. I sometimes also imagine whole rooms or create scenes where everything that is normally other colors is red. After I run out of things that are red, then I move onto orange and repeat the process until I am done with the entire rainbow (plus fuchsia). The order is: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and then fuchsia. I usually spend about 5-10 minutes on each color. If I find that my mind is trailing off onto other thoughts, I just bring myself back to the last color that I was thinking about before I got side tracked.

Once I am done with all of the colors, then I go to my happy place. The happy place can be anywhere in the world, universe, or even a fictional place. Anyone who I want in my happy place can be there (living or dead). I can say whatever I want and do whatever I want. The possibilities are endless in the happy place. I sometimes envision myself finding a calming, healing source in nature and tap into that energy. I touch the source and imagine myself being filled up with positivity and healing energy. Other times, I have conversations with people and make things right that made me uneasy in real life. Other times, I fly around weightless and observe the world, or even go into outer space. The only limits are one’s own imagination.

Here is a list of the colors, in order, as well as some of the items that I typically think about within these colors as an example.
